Maybe and Yes.

Maybe...

Maybe too many Gospel-believing Christians avoided jobs in the political realm for too long.

Maybe sometimes they took the jobs, but people-pleasing became their god.

Maybe money and wealth destroyed, leaving the image-bearer poorer than ever.

Maybe they took their eyes off the cross and let their gaze shift to the flag.

Maybe this place is too far gone, the vulnerable so flattened by the trampling of our feet over them.

Maybe we logged on to social media frequently while our Bibles became dusty on the bedside table.

Maybe we trusted the word of the 'authentic' blogger instead of knowing God's word within our hearts.

Maybe we stared at our phones while we walked, instead of locking eyes with the homeless and the abused on the streets.

Maybe we lorded titles and party allegiance over the actual Lord of all who died for us to see we need no other allegiance beside Him.

Maybe we no longer worship the Creator on His rightful throne, but the created in his oval office.

Maybe this is a country forsaken.

            Then again...

Maybe we can spend less time talking and more time listening.

Maybe we can participate in the hard, tearful work of reconciliation, and not in the wrongly focused work of self-exaltation.

Maybe we can repent.

...

To my Gospel-believing friends, what are you spending your time, your days, your life- 'sharing?'

To my curious friends, to my questioning friends, to my not-so-sure friends---Jesus is oh so worthy-even though Christians, and myself, are absolutely not.

Jesus is where hope is found. Your spouses, your travels, your pets, your Instagram, your self-care, your candidate-is where it is not found.

Jesus' stage of heaven and of earth is where His kingdom plays out with His created, using free will in all its beautiful mess. This is the mess we've all been born into, and the mess we contribute to, the beautiful mess He came to save.

Don't choose things as they are my friends.

Choose an eternal home, a good and just God, who enters into the world's mess, the country's mess, your family's mess, your internal mess, and reaches both His arms across all the 'aisles' of the world, dying for you and for me.

So that...

We may look and know Him. Be known by Him. Loved.

We may fall in love with the only right, perfect (without flaw), person to walk this planet. He is the only righteous judge, who is also in the place of our Defender, and the one who was put on trial in our (the guilty party's) place.

For His glory.
For you.

I rest in You, the creator and defender of my faith. What is a country without their eyes on God? A mess! Lord, help me 'reach across' to share my faith and my trust in you. My hope is not in a place, or a flag, it is found in an empty tomb. May I treat others with this knowledge primarily. Help me, Lord.

"...So the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him. For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
John 3:15b-16
