The End of an Era...

Today marks the first day in which I am no longer a resident. For the past 8 years I have been a trainee at Ohio State University (medical school and residency); but no longer. I am officially finished with my Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residency program. I now transition to work for an Ohio based primary care network called COPC (Central Ohio Primary Care) for the next 6 months. I will work with adults and children in an urgent care setting. This new job will allow me to have flexible hours so  I can spend time with Emma at home and study for my upcoming board certification exams.

As I reflect on the past 8 years I am reminded time and time again how God has been so faithful to me. Initially, I wasn't sure what He had in store for me by coming to Columbus for med school, but now I can look back in awe and thanksgiving for all He has provided. I have received excellent medical training, found a gospel-centered church family, and have many godly friends. Psalm 13:6 says, "I will sing to the Lord, because he has dealt bountifully with me" - this is unmistakably true for me.

I want to briefly describe the hospital in Honduras-Loma De Luz. How incredibly different it will be than the large tertiary care hospital I have just finished my training in! It is a small hospital (by American standards) with 20 beds and 3 operating rooms. Primarily, Loma De Luz is an outpatient clinic, with up to 100 patients seen daily. It has an emergency room, staffed by an ED physician but also jointly staffed with general practitioners. There are several operating rooms where the incredibly skilled surgeons perform a  range of procedures, from fracture repairs to C-sections to intracranial shunt placements. The maternity ward has 15-30 babies born each month within its walls. The hospital also has wound care and a physical therapy clinic. All in all, it is a place of love and compassion, where patients receive high quality medical care at the hands of servants of Jesus. The cost is substantially lower than public hospitals elsewhere in the country. I am excited to learn and to serve there for our 2 year term with Samaritan's purse.

Please pray we will seek Christ and His kingdom first, and also grow in our knowledge of Spanish. May we  trust God with our future!
